VetoInbox

Frequently asked questions

Is my email private?

Yes, by design. VetoInbox reads each new message briefly to decide whether it is political. It sends a reduced version (sender, subject, and message text with links shortened to their domain and your own address removed) to an AI service from OpenAI to classify it. We do not store message content. No person reads your email. We do not sell your data, show ads, or train AI models on your mail. Read the full privacy policy.

What counts as political?

VetoInbox targets political mass mail: fundraising appeals, campaign messages, petitions that collect donations, and similar solicitations from candidates, parties, PACs, and advocacy groups. It aims to leave alone mail that you actually need, such as notices from your county clerk or election office, and personal messages. It acts only when the AI is over 99% sure. It is not perfect, which is why every removal can be undone.

Will it take sides?

No. VetoInbox is nonpartisan. It treats every party, committee, and cause the same. Its goal is to block them all equally.

What if it removes something I want?

Removed mail goes to Gmail Trash, where it stays for 30 days. Open the Removed page in VetoInbox and press Undo to return a message to your inbox. You can also tick “Always allow this sender”. VetoInbox also never removes mail from anyone you have written to.

Why not just unsubscribe?

Political email is not covered by CAN-SPAM’s commercial-email rules, so senders have no federal duty to honor an unsubscribe request. Many do not, and lists are rented and swapped. Gmail’s block and unsubscribe tools work on one address or list at a time, and each new committee is a new sender. VetoInbox works on the category instead of the sender.

Does it report mail as spam?

No. VetoInbox never marks mail as spam and never reports a sender. It moves mail to Trash only. This keeps the tool nonpartisan and does not affect any sender’s reputation.

Does it work with other email services?

Not yet. At launch VetoInbox works with Gmail only (personal Google accounts). Some Google Workspace accounts may block the beta app.

What does VetoInbox need access to?

VetoInbox asks Google for permission to read, label, and move messages in your Gmail account. Google calls this the gmail.modify permission. It cannot send mail. It never permanently deletes mail.

Why does Google show an “unverified app” warning?

VetoInbox is in a small private beta. Google requires a full security review before an app can serve the public. We plan to complete that review after the beta. Until then, Google shows a warning screen and limits the app to 100 users. Your invite explains how to continue.

How do I stop using it and delete my data?

Open Settings, then Delete account. VetoInbox stops watching your mailbox, revokes its Google access, and deletes everything it stored. Mail already in Trash stays there until Gmail empties it. You can also revoke access any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

How much does it cost?

Free during the beta. See pricing.
